Cabo Verde's 10 Islands

Cabo Verde: an undiscovered piece of paradise

Every day there are international flights arriving from all over the world at airports in the archipelago, with effective connections to all islands.

The best thing about traveling is to go beyond tourist destinations, be like a local and absorve the culture.

Even in the voice of the morna, Cabo Verde is not lost in sad regrets. It lives.

With the African flavor, sprinkled with other worlds, the islands lull the days to the sound of mornas, funaná, batuques and a warm morabeza that leaves "sôdade" to those who leave.

Santo Antão Island

Santo Antão Island

Santo Antão steals hearts at first glance.

The contrast between the magnitude of the extensive rocky landscapes, the vastness of the sea and the green valleys is unexpected and overwhelming.

On this island, untouched and raw, are some of the most impressive trails in the world. Ribeira Grande, Vale do Paúl, Topo da Coroa (1979 m), the trail from Ponta do Sol to Cruzinha da Graça and the route of the old road between Porto Novo and Ribeira Grande, are unmissable challenges to feel the island.

Here, it is produced one of the best grogues (a rum-like drink) in the archipelago, which deserves tasting after a delicious lamb stew with beans.

São Vicente Island

São Vicente

São Vicente is the land of Cesária Évora as also the home of mornas, jazz and coladera. Its capital is the historic city of Mindelo, charming and beautiful, that is considered the most cosmopolitan and European city in the archipelago, with lively nights and a lot of cultural activity.

In Calhau, the island's picturesque fishing village, the beaches invite to surfing and bodyboarding, and despite the arid landscape, it is possible to find some baobab trees, the oldest trees on the planet.

The Archipelago's most famous carnival event takes place every year on this Island, that also receives the music festival “Baía das Gatas”, located on the beach with the same name, where the water is warm and crystal clear, and the International Theater Festival Mindelact.

São Nicolau Island

São Nicolau

São Nicolau ran the world in the voice of Cesária Évora, pictured as the island of those who followed the "far way road" to São Tomé.

It is a mystical land, given to the mysteries, beliefs and legends that accompany the days.

The grandeur of the black mountain contrasts with the color of the colonial houses and the sweetness of the people.

The visit to Tarrafal is essential to enjoy the medicinal properties of the sandy beaches, rich in titanium and iodine, indicated for the relief of diseases of the bones and joints.

Monte Gordo, Porto da Preguiça and Juncalinho are mandatory places to visit, as well as savoring the modje de São Nicolau (goatling stew).

Sal Island

aa

Sal (translates to salt) owes its name to the mineral that abounds on the island.
It's a small, flat, arid island, with a touch of lunar landscape.

White sand beaches, a dry tropical climate and warm, transparent waters have long won over tourists who come from all over the world looking for sun and rest.

It is the perfect destination to relax.

There are exceptional conditions for water sports, such as fishing, surfing, diving, kitesurfing and windsurfing.

The Salinas de Pedra Lume, the lava pool of Buracona, the pier of Santa Maria, the Botanical Garden Viveiro and the Gruta do Amor are mandatory stops.

Boa Vista Island

Boa Vista Island

Germano Almeida, a writer born in Boa Vista, wrote about his fantastic island, remembering the "beaches of thick and white sand, where the sea is deep, gentle and clear; beaches of light gravel and strong waves and also beaches so quiet as if they were lakes or simple puddles".

It is because of these beaches, and the warm days moved by the wind, that the island is perfect for the ones looking for a few days in paradise between rest and water sports.

There is always fresh fish on the table, a sincere morabeza and the morna sound in the back, reminding families that left by emigration.

A perfect day ends on a full moon night in the Viana Desert.

Maio Island

Maio Island

Maio is a quiet, welcoming and almost intact island, protected from tourist crowds.

A piece of paradise, maintaining the authenticity of traditional Cabo Verdean culture. There are important landmarks of the city's formation worth visiting, such as the Igreja Matriz, the Farol de S. José and the Maio Castle.

Its beaches, deserted by tourists, go around the whole island and invite to relaxed bathing and leisurely reading.

The Dunes of Morrinho, Monte Penoso, the Perimeter Forest of Terras Salgadas, the Bitchirotcha Beach and the Salinas of Porto Inglês are an indispensable visit.

Also, the spawning of the turtles is an unmissable moment - only possible if accompanied by a guide.

Santiago Island

Santiago Island

Santiago, the largest island in Cabo Verde, is home to the capital, Praia, and stands out for its rich cultural diversity and for some of the most important events in the country.

Here you live restlessness, fun, new experiences, with endless plans to make each day different and unforgettable.

Cidade Velha - formerly Ribeira Grande - is the oldest city created in the tropics by Europeans. It is in the North of this island where the Former Concentration Camp of Tarrafal is located.

The island is rich in contrasts: there are dizzying mountains, barren landscapes and green valleys after a few drops of rain.

Colonial marks, from pirate attacks to the slave trade, are very present, although some are in ruins.

The markets are vibrant, bastions of African culture, to the sound of traditional music, agricultural products, handicrafts and unmissable flavors.

Fogo Island

Fogo Island

The Fogo Island has the highest point of the archipelago, the Fogo Volcano, that is still active, but with no danger to residents and visitors.

Due to the majesty of the volcano, the island is as wild as it is beautiful, with fertile land, even with scarcity of water.

The wine grown in the crater of the volcano is an evident proof of this, as it is produced on the island, blending an unique flavor and high alcohol content.

It is worth climbing the top of Fogo, in a hike that can reach 6 hours walking, accompanied by a specialized mountain guide.

Here it is possible to contemplate the force of nature and live a one of a kind experience on this island.

Brava Island

Brava Island

Brava is the most remote, the greenest and the most flowery in the Cabo Verde archipelago, also known as Flowers' Island.

Those who visit swear that they have fallen in love for the island, such are the charms, delicious aromas and idyllic scenery.

Between deep valleys and elevated peaks, there are natural pools of crystal clear water, beautiful trails, roads covered with flowers, Krioula moray and unmissable flavors.

Getting lost in the colonial city of Nova Sintra, stopping at each viewpoint, going down to Fajã da Água bay for a dip in the natural pools, walking the Eugénio Tavares Trail and enjoying goat cheese is a must-do.

Santa Luzia Island

Santa Luzia Island

Santa Luzia is the only uninhabited island, but that doesn't make it any less relevant.

With an area of 35 square kilometers and the highest point at 395 meters above sea level, the island is an important natural reserve, home to a diverse and species-rich marine fauna.

Currently, access to the island is restricted for educational or scientific purposes, only being allowed for scientists studying local species (biologists) and fishermen from São Vicente and São Nicolau.

In the 18th century and in the 1960s, it was inhabited at times. However, frequent droughts proved to be stronger than the human desire to live in this paradise.
